Good Morning Linkers wherever you are, this is Princess Diana continuing my theme from Gran Canaria although we are now back in the much cooler NE.
The geography of this volcanic island varies greatly, from huge dunes in the South, according to legend blown in from the Sahara, to cliffs plunging over 1500 feet into the ocean not good to look down if you suffer from vertigo. The fertile North boasts vast tracts of banana plantations and tomato sheds, which from above almost look like lakes as they tend to be covered in with plastic or glass fibre sheeting. The South tends to be much sunnier which is why most of the tourist places are in the South. There seems to be little rain here and most of the reservoirs are very low but the ‘picon’, (small black granules of volcanic ash) absorb moisture from the atmosphere over night which keeps the native plants watered. In places of intense agriculture watering has to be done otherwise there wouldn’t be any beautiful flowers or golf courses for that matter. There are many weird and wonderful rock formations, some manmade but others just weather worn. One can climb up to most of them if one has the energy, I declined because of my false hips – well they make a good excuse!
