Does anyone know how long it takes to get from the Chepstow or Newport area, across the bridge and to the Filton area of Bristol in the rush hour. The cost of the toll would be helpful too.

As any Welshman will proudly tell you, you only have to pay money to get into Wales, not into England ;-)
(Tolls are only charged in the westbound direction. If you're going back, the rates are here: http://www.severnbrid....uk/toll_prices.shtml )

The AA routefinder gives the distance as 17.6 miles, with a journey time of 25 minutes but I'd allow 40 minutes if I needed to get into the heart of Bristol.

Sorry, I didn't see the reference to 'Filton'. The AA routefinder makes that 12.4 miles and 19 minutes. Half an hour should be sufficient.
whichever way you travel, at that time of day you're going to experience some healthy delays -
by m5, m4 and m32 you have to pass the entrances to UWE Bristol and the MOD's Abbey Wood site, past which traffic can be virtually stationary.
by m5 and A38 you have to negotiate the dreaded Gloucester Road, beginning with the struggle to get off the motorway at junction 15.

Thanks for the replies, very helpful. The toll is astronomical. I thought a season ticket would be relatively cheap if you were doing the journey on a daily basis. I think we'll stay in England.
some friends moved recently to tintern from thornbury - he works for bristol council, she travels to her office in london from bristol parkway. both drive over the bridge daily, and both have tags - it works out at about £25 per week each, which is less than 20 cigarettes daily. when set against the advantages of living in wales (free prescriptions, etc) they willingly pay for their bridge journeys.
