My car has been off the road for a while but I want to put my number plate on the old car onto a new one. Is there anyway I can do this without having a mot on the old one - which would cost a fortune to fix up to put it back on the road :(

Thanks

If you have a number plate on an old car call this car A, you do not have to Mot car A to put the number plate onto car B (newer car) as long as this car (car B) has a valid MOT you will not need mot car A to just swap the plates around, hope this helps :)
think its a bit more than just swap the plates around, there is a bit of paperwork involved...

As alperchino and chas have said it can be done. Make an application to DVLA with the appropriate fee.
Yeah sorry I did forget to mention that the paperwork is due sorry guys

Thanks everyone, but from what I read it must have a mot but it hasn't got to be taxed :(
Would it be possible to scrap the car and then apply for the vacant number for your new car?
I don't know if this is possible but it may be worth asking DVLA.

ohhh I didn't know you could do this, I'll try and find out thanks :)
Can you not declare the older car off the road? With its number plate and then request a change after it is declared off the road? I'd write to the dvla if your really unsure but I'm sure it doesn't have to have an mot just to swap plates
