Hi fellow EVers

You are probably as disappointed as I am by this EV. It has to be the easiest
one I've ever done and I wonder how it came to be accepted for publication.

EV is supposed to be a step up from the Spectator etc. & I hope this is just a one-off.

I think 4 down is strictly incorrect.
Bear, the (singular of the) answer is defined as "Twenty-four (in some places, twelve) sheaves of wheat; a shock, or stook." (onelook.com). So perhaps the setter is in a place where it is twelve.
On the easy side certainly - but there were some words that were either not known to us or were spelled differently; but it was a pleasant enough puzzle for those of us that didn't want our brains stretched! To be fair, none of the big puzzles this year have been overtaxing which bodes badly for the summer months. On the subject of the BRB - not having the forenames is a pity but there are some plusses, the most important being that it is not falling apart..... yet - and it still has the section of words beginning ma through to me!
The definition in the clue for 4 down is verbatim the definition of the singular form found in the BRB (both the CD-ROM and 2011 edition).
I don't think there is any harm in having a range of difficulty - I quite enjoyed this one.
For anyone wanting more of a challenge Saturday's Inquisitor 1217 by Ifor was a classic.
Yes this was certainly at the easier end of grid fill, but I thought the clues were of a high standard and generally the surface reading was really very good. I thought the preamble was a bit misleading regarding the final step. Overall though a fun puzzle, thanks Moordon.
Totally agree with both of the last two posts - for me The Inquisitor was the toughest puzzle of the year (Listener,EV or IQ)
Was hoping this would keep me entertained on the way home from Exeter yesterday. I was able to sleep after Tiverton.
My quickest ever EV completion too, but good fun while it lasted, and provided one or two additions to my crosswording learning curve. The spelling at 11 down, the schooner and the songbird, for example.
