5 Clampers just been jailed for intimidation against motorists. To me the jail sentences seem to be pretty minor and I doubt that it will deter anyone from doing similar.

What should be done to stop this scourge on society?

can i just point out that - whilst i have no fondness for the clampers themselves - generally if you park illeagly then you have to take your chances and stop moaning when you get fined

*grumpy as some nob is using our carpark and causing problems for staff which i have to sodding sort out*
It's not a scourge on society - people who think they have a right to park anywhere they want for as long as they want for nothing are the scourge on society.

And whilst I'm against clampers going to extremes (as this lot may well have done) that doesn't stop them having a necessary role.
I'm no fan of clampers and their intimidating ways but I would prefer it was the people who decide to park illegally who were jailed. It might deter them from doing the same thing.
I loved watching The Clampers & The Soup Dragons with the kids.

i admire my clamper man who watches our works car park, he has to deal with such agression and intimidation. the only real criticism i have is that the release fee is extortionate.

if people park where they shouldn't - and we have lots of signs - then they deserve a fine. but the fine should be proportional to the inconvenience caused. a £175 release fee is what makes people drag crow bars and hammers from the boot of their cars (that a pyscopathic disregard for civility).
Perhaps it would have been clearer to most if the poster had provided a link to this case.

No need to use the Daily mail site if one doesn't wish to, so as not to offend, here is the Guardian's version.

Yes after reading what measures they took, I think they were justly treated, although if the areas are properly sign posted and some wish to ignore the warnings then these selfish persons also need to be punished harshly.
Whilst I agree that clampers do have their place in keeeping illegal parking at bay I saw a program on tv a couple of years ago on this subject and these clampers were acting way, way, putside the law and intimidating motorists who were parked perfectly legally.
Recently in Birmingham, a clamping company was prosecuted for tampering with pay & display machines where people got less time than they paid for. If they didn't spot the error on the ticket when they came back their cars had been towed away. People such as these should be locked up for years:-
