I know this would depend on so many variables but what would the average monthly utility bills for 2 people living in a 2 bed, 2 reception room house be vs a 2 bed, 1 reception room flat? TIA

No idea of actual amounts, but it really depends on the size of the rooms, type of building and location in the building of the flat.

For example, an energy efficient new build house will be cheaper to run than an old style victorian flat with big windows and high ceilings. smaller rooms heat faster and a flat in the middle or towards the top of the building is generally warmer as it receives heat rising from the flats below. It also depends on how many walls are exposed to the outside and how many are shared (by people who heat their homes).

All things being equal though, the flat should be cheaper.
All you can do is find someone living in a dwelling similar to the one you are researching, and ask them about their monthly utility bills. When I was in the Navy, moving about a great deal, it was a pretty good indicator. Most of those I asked even let me see a few of their bills.

Good Luck

Thanks both; we are trying to weigh up living in a house with very cheap rent (owned by family) vs a flat with rent more expensive than that of the house (by about £200).
