...there is a TV ad running at the moment asking this question. Well, the truth is, yes. This has been happening to me at night time for about a year (long before I saw the ad) and I really didn't know what to make of it. If I had been a bloke, I could have blamed the prostate! But now I'm a bit reluctan to see my GP about it because he may just think it's probably because I have seen the advert. I can go to the loo before I go to bed, watch TV for about 15 mins, fall asleep and half an hour later I wake up needing the loo again! Go back to sleep, and an hour later, I am up again to the loo. And I have seriously cut down on fluids. I don't have any fluids for at least 6 hrs before going to bed. Anyone else a sufferer?

Heated seat like warm bath rellaxes the muscles of the involuntary sphincter leaving you holding on with the voluntary one at that point you can't hold on much longer
..and why do you want to go soooo much, when you go to a public loo and it's shut...?
rowan.........eh?
Not my idea...asked a colleague when ex had a car with heated seats something about sphincters and relaxation anyway... had a similar problem 5 mins from home on a cold day I'd be scanning the signs for a public loo

So - is it the heat, or the cold?
rowan.....I can understand why a warm bath relaxes smooth bladder muscle and makes you want to pee.......in the old days this method was used for patients with acute retention (it NEVER worked) but we are talking about COLD making you pee more.....which is it? Cold or warmth?.

The business of peripheral vasoconstriction in the cold, is all to do with reducing heat loss rather than making one pee more and the blood just gets distributed to the muscles.....nothing to do with making you pee more.

Mind you .....i can't think of a better explanation.
I think its thehot drinks and caffeine myself I am so much better in the summer when it is more herbal teas and squash even though I drink more... and the warm bath does work for acute retention sometimes if it is just warm not hot

Not in my case RW.
Yes smart- in answer to your question, I do. At least 3 to 4 times a night, bloody knackering it is at times too! But no, I won't be going to the docs about it.
Are you any worse in the day as well or is it just at night...

I wonder if it is a nerve problem that is affected by your position in bed...
Question Author
Not really RW - tend to pee a bit more in the morning, but I thought most paople did.....once you have your first cup of tea/whatever - gets your kidneys going doesn't it?
try a fluid balance chart for a couple of days measure everything out and everything in it may be you are drinking more than you think you are a little here a little there
Question Author
I have done that RW 'cos that is what it recommends on the relevant website - as I say, have seriously cut down on fluids, to the point where my lips are always dry. Constantly making my lips sore by catching a 'snag' on my lip and chewing! HELP! lol
Next suggestion drink a little more just water or fruit juice in small amounts throughout the day concentrated urine can irritate the bladder apparently. If you are thirsty you should be drinking, Still think your gp is best person to advise... and a referral for urodynamic testing
I've had these symptoms, went to GP, referred to hospital for investigations; diagnosis was "overactive bladder syndrome". Given bladder re-training exercises and medication (tolterodine). Things are a whole lot better - so go to GP. Things probably won't improve without intervention.

treetops1 // "I go at least 3 times through the night, I am 64 and just take it as a part of getting old. If it worries you go to the GP."//. At your age I think you too should see your GP and have your prostate checked. I can remember only too well Bob Monkhouse - who left it too late- imploring all men over 60, regardless of having symptoms or not, to have a check. It is a very simple procedure, and can be life saving. It is done routinely in some other countries, but it seems if you want it on the NHS you probably have to ask your GP.
