Yes we're connected to France, The Netherlands, Ireland and the US by submarine cables. I think the first ones were across the channel in 1850-ish

How did you think telephone calls could be made outside the UK (as we are an island) before the satellite age? It would need very tall telephone poles to cross the sea !
Good Morning MRsnail

I shouldn't worry too much about missing the obvious.

Sometimes, even I, "Couldn't see the cable for the seas"

OS
Here is an interactive map of them

and when they laid the first cables on the sea bed they discovered that the bottom of the ocean wasn't quite as flat as they expected, and they used to mark the end of the cable mid-ocean with a buoy, go back to port for some more cable and go back out and find the buoy. no sattelite navigation, just a good old compass, pretty clever lads.
Not just cables ... Oil, too!! : )
Damn big cables some of those, Hoppy!
Some are as big as welsh Wales! : )
This is a intresting read, PLUTO or Pipe Line Under The Ocean.

I saw them digging up the beach in North Devon a few years ago. They were replacing the old cables with fiber optic ones.
