Travel insurance for an 83 and 87 year old?

My parents (aged 83 and 87) are trying to get insurance cover for a 6 weeks trip to Malta. So far the best premium they have been quoted is £870 (!). They are both in good health, have the type of medications one would associate with their age (gout, cholestrol for dad, hypertension for mum) - dad had three heart attacks 23 years ago, mum is 6 years in remission from breast cancer. I know they are 'high risk' but this premium is stopping them taking a trip to the sun that will be really beneficial. Most insurers won't even cover anyone over 80, let alone for more than 4 weeks - has anyone any experience in this field please?

I think my 84 year old neighbour uses More Than...........
No personal experience but Which magazine recently recommended trying these for those aged 80+. These were for annual European cover, which as they are going for six weeks might work out cheaper.

Several charities (supporting the elderly or people with medical conditions) have a link to this broker on their websites:

I've posted that link many times before; several people have replied to say that they'd successfully found cover by using that broker.

My father travelled at the age of over 90 to the USA without insurance, because of the costs you mention. I warned him that I was not prepared to fly out and fetch his body back, but that I'd get the British Consul to cremate him and send the ashes back. Didn't make any difference, and he did actually get back safely.
My parents used Allclear travel insurance they specialise in travel insurance for the older person. Was £100s cheaper than they could get elsewhere. Worth a look.
Have you tried the Saga site? they are specifically designed for the other person.
Hi boxtops, I have started getting letters through from Saga and on every occasion so far they are a lot more expensive than my usual insurances. Always worth a look though. You may get a cheaper quote.
I must admit I tried their household insurance, it was no cheaper than anywhere else.
^^ but my thought is that if they are covering older people for travel, they will be more used to dealing with complex medical patients.
Have a go at http://www.goodtogoinsurance.com as well
Saga used to be good value but the general experience that I am reading about and have experienced is that they have priced themselves out.
if you go to staysure

youcan get 30 days for £160
