The Channel4 story of the fate of Linda Carty was very harrowing. From life as a Primary School Teacher in St.Ktts(granting a British Passport)to the mean streets of Houston and Dallas. She was shamed into leaving her school in the Caribbean following a brief encounter with a St.Kitts Policeman. She was now pregnant,single..a big taboo.Soon after her arrival in Texas, she was beaten, robbed and raped by Drug addicts, again she became pregnant.Linda took the heart-wrenching option of giving the baby up for adoption. She said that in all conscience, she could not show the love that the child deserved.

It is always good to see Clive Stafford-Smith,the English Lawyer who is the fiercest fighter against the Death Penalty in the USA.

You see Lindas life went into a tailspin when she gave up the child.A string of abusive relationships later, she was implicated in a kidnapping.A young pregnant woman died ,tied up,in the boot of a Car.Two youths admitted taking part in the crime but,in a plea bargain, said Linda called the shots.

Come the Trial she drew the worst Public Defender of a Capital Murder Trial in the whole of the US.It is on record that this Lawyer handled the cases of more people currently sitting on Death Row than the combined number of condemned in the other 27 States that have the Death Penalty.

Mr Stafford-Smith expressed a plea at the end to the British People,to lend sympathy and support.Linda has been on Death Row since 2002.Time is running out, fast.

We watched this in rapt attention. At the end OH turned and said,"D"ya know,in this Country,in all likelihood she wouldnt be in Prison at all.But sent to a Psychiatric Hospital for a term"....Exactly!!

atrollope, as i posted i did watch it all, and do think it a nightmare for her, and as she had been an informant for the DEA, that should have at least been noted, and gone on her record, she could easily have been killed by those people, so she put her life on the line over and over. No where does it say she is poor, if you look at her family, they aren't living in a shanty town, and at least give her some support, but the legal brief she had was appalling, and that also seems to have been brushed over. There are more questions than answers in this case.

So you will sign the petition...em10?
will have a look certainly, but can't understand the justice system in US at all, not if this is the outcome.
Question Author
I wish someone here would..if not just on purely Humanitarian grounds..
I signed the petition soon after the programme in order that the case gets looked at again, may be futile but one never knows.
Linda is British and Innocent, but it does not seem she has attracted much sympathy with Answerbankers.....maybe if she was White..hmmm

Perhaps her biggest crimes are that she is Poor and Black ..?

^^^^posting that sort of nonsense is hardly going to help.

What about her alibi??
Question Author
OK ummmm ..but it was a flimsy attempt at stirring up controversy,,and then some may take a sideswipe...others object to that cold comment..they are the ones that may go on to sign the petiition..No-one has any right to take revenge by Executing another Human Being.
Your comment is basically saying racism. If she was white we'd sign the petition.

I haven't watched the programme....

Read into it what you will...and for Lindas sake,I want to state, that I am in no way connected to her appeal/case.

I hope there are some ABers looking in ..in the USA,who may have reservations about how Justice was done..or not,in this case.
Listen atrollope, what you are trying to do is very commendable, and for the record I've looked furhter into it ( not having seen the programme) and signed the petition, but stirring up racist claptrap does not help.
The death penalty is a total abberation, this woman needs a re-trial and you're trying to draw people's attention to it, fair enough.
Clanad is you're 'all American' type of chap, always polite, friendly and who takes time to answer but very American, he's a hunting, shooting, fishing, death sentence, God fearing, blueberry muffin sort of chap whose perfectly sure in his own mind that places like Death row in Texas are perfectly lovely, and seemingingly able to ignore the fact that Geroge W Bush once took 11 minutes to read someon's 128 page appeal before saying it was okay to carry on and execute them. You are unlikely at best to sway anyone with a mindset like that that they're ' tried and tested' methods of judicial murder are not hunky dory, and it doesn't help to err towards being tetchey and insulting to members. You'll never change the world but you have got a few signatures from here, which is the best you can hope for and for the record I seriously hope she does get a reprieve.

Please let me assure you KNOX,that it was the furthest thing from my mind to accuse AB members of being racist.
After reading earlier posts,it became evident to me,that very few ABers had ever heard of this womans situation...yet she is British!..what I was intimating was that had she been White, she would have most likely got Press coverage and TV....we would "know her".
From what I can gather she actually has dual nationality, she has both US citizenship and also Bristish as she's originally from St Kitts.
I haven't heard of a lot of people on Death Row, but I don't think it's a racist plot, I just think that the media/ publicity machine that these States that condone such things has got is pretty damned good at burying not only people but news as often as possible. The idea that black people don't get as much press though as white people in similar circumstances is rubbished by the very high profile campaigns by supporters of Reginal Brooks etc.
In fact if you look at this year's execution list, tell me truthfully how many people you have heard of and notice that far and away the majority of those people are white.
http://www.deathpenal...g/execution-list-2011

I think it's unfortunate if we turn things like this into a racist matter when clearly it isn't, not by individuals and not by the press, it's just a matter of what's relevant to their own individual papers- and someone with dual naitonality miles away doesn't sell papers in the UK.
I am not a racist and I'm anti death penalty, be they poor black people or rich white ones.

Thank you for the info NOX

i still say,in this case of Linda Carty, serious omissions and errors have been made.
Is is not the sworn duty of a Lawyer to present the best case they can,for thieir client ?
If so,why did this Lawyer decline to allow a leading D.E.A. Officer to speak of the valuable evidence, and work she had provided to convict known Drug Dealers and Gang Leaders. How she had risked her life to help Law Enforcement,by infiltrating these Peoples activities. It dont matter how smart you are,you are still being "used" as a C.I.(cofidential informant)
Why did he not inform a British Consul,as he is bound to?
Why did he not take the trip(paid by the Justice Dept)to St.Kitts to thoroughly research and prepare his case?
Question Author
Linda Carty was convicted solely on the evidence of 1 of the teenage boys, who had earlier admitted taking part in the kidnap of the woman who later died in the trunk of a car...sure the boys Lawyer is going to accept the terms of a plea bargain, given that it was now a "Capital"case...and point the finger at Linda..who was always "snooping" around, wanting to be near the "Action"..I believe Americans call them "Patsies"!!
I don't think anyone is arguing with any of that, hence some people have signed the petition, myself included, it was merely it being pitched as a racist problem that concerned me when it clealry isn't. There ARE lots of racist problems, but lack of media attention for death row inmates isn't one of them.
I still want to know about her alibi?
