I have a VCR player/recorder and a DVD recorder/player, (with hard drive) connected up to my TV.

I then play the VCR tape in the machine, and while it is playing on my TV, I record it to my DVD hard drive, (this gives me the chance to edit it if needed), I then quick dub from my hard drive onto a DVD-R disc.

A Video player, a DVD recorder, and a cable ?

Or you can get special machines with the ability to record from tape to disk.

I'm sure you could substitute a PC for the recorder if you have a DVD write drive.

I keep meaning to preserve some tapes I have, but don't get around to it.
If they are commercial VHS tapes you may find it hard (or virtually impossible) to do without fairly specialised equipment as they may have copy protection on them... If they are "home movies" then it shouldn't be hard with a DVD recorder and a video player (either separate or a combined unit)

If you wanted to use the DVD drive in a computer you'd need some sort of video capture on the computer.

You need an analogue to digital converter, , have the cables you will need etc.
