26d Nuts - crack almonds to start with (4) ? A ? A

I just wish I understood how "bate" and "gaga" answer the clues.
Gag = Crack (a joke) + A (start of Almonds)
Bate is a double meaning - to beat wings or a rage
Bate can mean to flap the wings impatiently or it can mean a rage
