I know this is more than a bit of a dumb question but can you make yourself ill from eating gone off marg? Like I Can't Believe It's Not Butter (I know, it's not 'real' marg).

Nar, as long as its not furry, go for it.
If it has actually Gone Off as you say I wouldn't risk it. Over sell by date Yes, Gone Off, No.
... also if it it smells a bit odd I wouldn't risk it either and I do hate throwing food stuff away.

Well it was about 7 months out of date and had gone quite a bit darker on top. I just scraped it off and used the lighter stuff at the bottom. I was starving!
You were starving so you ate margarine?!
Question Author
Noooo. I had crumpets but you can't put nothing on them.
Ahhh was thinking maybe things had got to really dire straits and the cupboard was bare apart from a forgotten tub of marge!
Question Author
ha ha, the thought of that makes me feel a bit ill.
When he was younger (around 5-9 years old probably) my brother used to eat margarine when he could get away with it; I caught him once scraping a load up on to his thumb to eat; yuk!
Apparently stuff like Flora or other margerines, are so artificial, that even if left outside for months - *nothing* will eat them, or grow on them. So-they won't get 'furry'... ;-)
You have to butter us all up before we answer questions like this!

Seriously though if it has not gone off then it should be okay to use. If you are in any doubt use it for baking and the heat will kill any suspected germs. If you die then we will know we are all wrong.
yes microwave it first and pour it on, just to be sure

i find melted butter that has set again to taste nicer than normal actually...dont know why
