Does anyone know of a good book or site for me to investigate how to sort out my own funeral in the cheapest way. I am not anticipating dying soon but I cant bear the thought of money being spent in this way.

You can have a very cheap funeral indeed. You don't have to have a service of any kind, you don't need a hearse.

A cardboard coffin is more that good enough for a cremation, it can be transported by van or estate car to the crematorium without pomp or ceremony and 'slotted' in without a service.

Or you can dig a big hole in your back garden and be buried there. It must be recorded on the Title.

The only legal requirement is that the death is registered.

You could arrange your own funeral now and pre-pay. Not advisable if you hope to emigrate at some point. That way you get to choose exactly the funeral you want.
My mum pre-booked her funeral about 10 years ago and she got a 10% discount. She keeps looking at the price of funerals now and boasting about how much money she has saved! She did it because she knows I won't have that sort of money handy and so that she can choose her hymns.
If you haven't got a family, just make sure you die in debt.

A free funeral will follow. what are they going to do, bring you back to life?
LOL Mamjet! Keep them coming.
Sorry, Mamjet, I free funeral supplied by whom exactly?

I have done some research on this. www.classicfunerals.co.uk are the cheapest traditional funeral at 750 + disbursements and I confirmed this by telephone with them.
There is another company on the net who advertise a funeral at less than 500 + disbursements but there is no service nor anyone present - its simply disposal of the body.
Yeah I know it's an old thread but as it's still showing in the search results for cheap funeral I thought people may like to know of a cheap funeral website where the prices start at just £495 plus disbursements.
The other option is £995 (fixed) plus disbursements.

hope that might help someone find an affordable funeral
I would suggest a Google search of low cost/cheap funerals then call round 5 or 6, many have cheap headline figures but hidden extras so make sure you get the quote in writing. I managed to get a full funeral for under £1000 from BB funerals, I had to compromise & hold the funeral earlier in the day but they gave me a great deal with all the trimmings.
