When were speed bumps first used in London? I noticed them in the film Tinker Tailor, set in 1973.

You will find all the info by googling
Was that on private land?
I would have sworn the UK did not have them until the 1980s
Okay, wendilla, I give up.
Give us the link.
I'v just spent 10 minutes with Google and I can't find the answer.
I can't either.................
Nor me. All I can find is a reference to the Netherlands being the first country in Europe (1970) and the UK following 'in the 1980s'.
according to this article speedbumps were introduced in the uk in 1981

wendilla, that link does not give a definitive answer
London council tests speed bumps for cyclists to initital negative reactions
Despite their safety benefits, drivers have grumbled about speed bumps since they were first introduced in Europe in 1970, but now they have been installed in a London street to slow cyclists.
still not a specific answer regarding the UK
Must have been about the early 70's.
The primary legislation is contained in sections 90A to 90F of the Highways Act 1980 (as amended by the Transport Act 1981). The Act (sections 90A and 90B) makes it clear that road humps can only be constructed on roads with speed limits of 30 mph or less. It seems then the legislation was introduced no earlier than 1981.
the answer is 1981 wendilla
Yes that is right just found this.
Speed humps were introduced in the UK in 1981. There are an estimated 30,000 in London and at least that number in the rest of the country. Conventional speed humps cost about £2,000 each.

Thanks for all that, oddly enough Googling and Wiki were the first places I looked, with no real success! It struck me as incongruous in the film, they were on a street, no private land.
Didn't they have 'sleeping policemen' before then?
I wish I could understand the logic of people like wendilla who reply with 'google' or 'google is your friend'.
Why bother posting at all if you can't answer or at least provide the relevant link?
I will ignore that remark but you can get a lot more info by googling
is it not obvious that the film was released later!the film was set in 1973 but filmed later.they would not have dug up the humps for authenticity
