External HD Problem

I have a 1TB Western Digital Elements external hard drive. I use this mainly for storing avi files which I have downloaded to watch on the ps3. Up until recently it worked absolutely fine.

However, for the past few days any new files I save to this hard drive cannot be further copied. Neither to the ps3, back onto the laptop or onto the memory of my phone, I just get an error message 'Can't read from source file or disk'.

Anything that was saved onto the hard drive prior to this can be copied without problems. I've checked the properties of the new files and folders and they seem ok.

Any ideas what this could be?

I know that the WD Elements units have an in-built encryption option included. Is it possible that this has been accidentally activated, meaning that your destination device when trying to transfer from the WD cannot recognise the file? If the unit has been reset for any reason it may be set to encrypt by default?

1) The external hard drive to FAT32 must be formatted using your PC. The PS3 only recognizes FAT32 and will not recognize the NFTS file system that most hard drives are formatted to.

2) Encode your music files to the MP3 format, your video files in DiVX or MP4 format and your pictures in JPG format. These formats are the only media formats that the PS3 recognizes.

3) Create "Music," "Video," "Picture" and "Game" folders in your external hard drive and place all of your media in the correct folder. If you do not create or place your media in these folders, then the PS3 won't find any of the media that you load onto your external hard drive.

4) Connect your external hard drive using a USB cable and turn on your PS3. If your PS3 cannot find or recognize your hard drive, then make sure that the USB cord is firmly connected, and your external hard drive can be host powered. If it cannot be host powered, you need an adapter to power your external hard drive.
