The government is looking to fund councils to retain to return to weekly bin collections.

For food waste I can see the advantages but for recycling and garden waste bins surely fortnightly is good enough, so long as the receptacle is large enough?

"Must agree with Gromit on this one"

Proof were it needed that Eric Pickles has lost it completely :-)
Here in Greece we have daily collections - much better.
On the other hand, we are bankrupt :-)
We have general household waste collected every week, and cans/bottles and paper/cardboard collected one week and plastics and garden rubbish the following week. Seems to work well here.
AOG, I'm really surprised at that - a lot of food waste is protein (meat, fat) which doesn't compost well When we get our 7th bin, we can only put food rejects in it - green is separate.
same here, we have weekly collections but could easily get by with fornightly..
Well it's not guarantied yet as I understand it. They're going to offer incentives? But weekly collections should never have been stopped in the first place. It is shameful a country that considers itself civilised can not even remove waste every 7 days as required and paid for by its people. If the authorities are incapable of achieving that, then they should get out and be replaced by those who can.
"We don't have wheelie bins."
You'll have your council spend your money on them, and deliver them as soon as they decide to jump on the bandwagon of failing to provide sufficient service. We never used to have them, now we have 3 large ones to store. Woe betide you if you forget an miss a collection. Can only suggest fly tipping on the council steps as the fair solution.

This is the question I was hoping someone could answer. In which parts of the country are there, actually, only fortnightly bin collections? Those are the places that, if they exist, plainly need lookng at.
Otherwise it seems that most areas DO have weekly bin collections of varying sorts.
our council has just decided to go to fortnightly black bin collections, starting in November.
Only houses with front gardens have wheelie bins here.
Round here they collect the general waste one week and re-cycling the next. That way they say they have weekly collections! I find, with four adults in the house, once a fortnight for general waste isn't enough.
