I had a cold sore about 5 weeks, and then I got another one last week. What causes them? I used to get them as a child, did not have one for about 30 years and now I get them again.

Go get something properly medicated from the chemist tomorrow, seek their advice - sounds like you need something a bit more substantial than supermarket preparations.

It's a virus - what have you used to treat it?
It's herpes....

Don't kiss anyone...

I used a cream which I bought from aldi, supposed to put in on a first sign of tingliness. Not sure if it helped or not. I lasted about a week.

Its cleared up now, lets see if I get another one soon.
i have just got over a terrible dose of cold sores on my lips about five blisters in all, i do suffer from herpes simplex but i had a sunbed 4 weeks ago and i reckon the sunbed was too strong and that brought it on, have also heard that dirty unclean sunbeds in parlours can cause cold sores. maybe its the change in the weather ? who knows. anyway after the last episode i will definately be applying an anti viral ointment at the very first itch/signs/tingling of a cold sore. they look filthy and dirty and i dont want to go through that again. ive learnt my lesson as i usually just ignored the first signs.
They usually erupt when your immune system is a bit low..try to eat more onions or garlic..you must have had chicken pox as a child and the virus never leaves only flares up again as I say when your under the weather.
