Have solved all clues and completed the grid but cannot see the 23 squares to highlight. Also, the contiguous blocks of letters yielded from all clues is baffling me, so I cannot identify the travellers and route taken. Any help out there?

Hi haggis - the route taken has a colour in it, the same as that of the grid.

Thanks Slaney - I had some wrong letters and have now reshuffled to give me the characters and the route taken. Whilst I have identified the sentiment row to blank out and I think I have the song, I cannot see the cryptical depiction and therefore unable to highlight the 23 squares.
I'm in exactly the same position, haggis!
Is anyone prepared to give another hint for the 23 squares that need to be highlighted?
Hi Voulez-vous
When you think of the song think "positions" rather than link words.
I finished this puzzle quite quickly - and loved it - but I have one question for everyone. For 2D I can only find "D" as my spare letter, when I know I need an "I". What am I doing wrong please?
Hi Indy-trier.
I have finished now too. It was a very enjoyable puzzle. Unfortunately I have now posted mine off and can't remember the clue (or answer!) for 2d!
Indy-trier, 2d - Spoilt awardee is tiresome.(8)
anagram of awardee +i (missing letter) - I had s at first as an extra letter - anagram of "awardee is"
Doh!! Thanks Slaney! I had originally discounted the past tense as the clue said "is" rather than "was" tiresome. I can easily mislead myself!
