What does it mean when a cat keeps washing all the time?
My 16 year old cat has a tumour behind his ear and is having surgery next week, and he is continually licking and washing himself, all the time. He has been well but is a little subdued at the moment, understandably.

Does it mean he is itching, feeling dirty or confused or something else?

any advice welcomed.

I doubt that even the world's most experienced pet psychologist you could tell you exactly what's going through your cat's mind. However I do know that no cat will ever wash himself unless he's completely secure in his environment. (Cats will only wash when they're sure that there are no predators, such as dogs, or rivals for their territory, in the area). A cat who is washing himself is normally a very relaxed cat which, I'm sure, is exactly how you'd like your feline friend to be.

I hope that the op goes well.

Chris
My guess is he feels itchy maybe a little uncomfortable, maybe he can even smell the tumour, dogs can smell tumours so why not a cat, maybe he is washing to rid himself of the smell. I don't think you will get a positive answer.

Good luck with the op.
feliway plug ins/spray may help him feel a little more relaxed. good luck with the op...

Thank you all for your advice, and for the lovely sentiment Chris. That is, of course, exactly how I would wish my Little one to feel.
Can't wait til Wednesday's over!
