19yr old son has an old Fiesta (value @500) and has insurance with Norwich Union since Feb 05 on their young driver's scheme. In march he caused slight damage to a parked car - no injuries - and i paid for the repair to the dmage to his car. The renewal has just arrived at 2500! Was thinking of upgrading his car next year, but now seriously thinking of getting him a new car that will last a good few years with free insurance. Any ideas?

It's outrageous, I know, especially when you paid for the damage and presumably didn't claim!  The lesson is NEVER tell the insurance until you have to.  If you tell them and decide not to claim after all, they put it on their records and hike up your costs.  Free insurance is a good option, providing they'll allow someone with a claim.

Don't forget that free insurance ill only last a year. He will then be 20 with a car worth 5000 with (hopefully) 2 years no claims bonus - am guessing that it will cost even more because of the value of the car.

Try ringing around for more quotes (CIS are good for kids)

Dunno if this is true, but my friend says his renewal is always much more expensive than a new quote. Hes been with Tesco for the past 4 years and ever year he just gets a new quote and goes with that: apparently it always beats the renewl offer they make him. Also, I guess you wouldn't have to delcare the acciden then? although it seems like they already know about it. Try going with another company and not declaring that previous, since you never claimed.
Mr Pahoehoe: Following what I said about not informing them... you can't "not inform" a new company!  I insured my old man on my car, as he's old and sensible therefore reduced my fee.  He'd previously asked his insurer about repairs to his car, but decided not to claim.  My insurer then told me I hadn't declared his claim!  What claim?!  The moral is, you tell insurers anything and every company in the world knows about it, claim or no claim.

Anyone suggesting that you should not tell your insurance company something that might materially affect the quotation they will give, or your prenium is giving the worst advice possible.

Be assured, the insurance company WILL find out that you avoided giving them information, and as such WILl INVALIDATE your insurance in the event of a claim being made against you. And believe me that will cost you far more than the increase in your insurance quote.

Buy him a pushbike!!!

It's worth looking at the new car/free insurance deals. I have a friend who took up one of these offers at 19 and after the first 'free' year was given a 65% discount (paid 550 the 2nd year) on a new MG ZR

Good luck

English Ford: someone hits your car in a car park, you pay for the repairs yourself without telling your insurers - who's to know?  Everyone's a winner.

Cooky,

My point wasn't based on the scenario you describe.

Obviuously, if all the work is done without insurance companies being involved they you have no need to tell them, and they would look at you slightly askance if you did.

My point was based on the general notion that you should hide something from them that they should know about.

That is not only illegal, but downright stupid.
