I learned only today that one of my great grandfather's medals was sold at auction in 2008. Does anyone know if it is possible to trace the buyer via the auction house?

I doubt it but unless we have an expert on this topic I suggest the best you can do is ask the auctioneers.

I didn't know of its existence till today and yes I would love the opportunity to buy it back as I daresay other members of the family would. I obviously don't know the circumstances under which it was sold but it is sad that the medal has gone out of the family as there is a lot of history attached.
