Not that I needed convincing but I just watched Mythbusters having a go at 6 or so of the Moon Hoax theories, all totally busted of course but does anyone else find it completely staggering that there are still idiots out there who are convinced that NASA faked the landings? No doubt most of them after watching Capricorn one which faked Mars landings.

People out there believe in aliens, the after life, ghosts, many things due to their religion. Doesn't make them idiots and calling people idiots just because they choose to believe what they do is pretty nasty though especially as some of the 'it was a fake landing' stories are pretty plausible.

Back when they did first land on the moon was it so unrealistic for people to think that can't be possible? I don't think so. After all, who would have thought a mobile phone could hold so much information? Who would have thought CD's would actually take over from vinyl?

I've never seen Capricorn One
Capricorn One was a good film. It stands the test of time pink-kittens. If you get the chance it's an enjoyable watch. The Conspiratists are loonies and will always be there I think, just like the World Trade Centre loonies that said that basically Pres Bush ordered the attack and the CIA planted explosives inside the building.
might partake in a watch then Chrissa, thank you
I must admit to being one of them R1Geezer! As Pink-kittens said, you should not call people idiots because of their beliefs. I think it is pretty stupid to believe that there is a guy living in the sky and that if you make a wish to him then your dreams will come true but I do not call the people who believe in God Idiots for doing so.

I think landing on Neptune is far more plausible than the existence of any God.

On a slightly different vein, this film implies that Apollo 17 wasn't the last Apollo mission to the moon. Seems a bit Blair Witch like to me but a decent trailer...

People believe what it suits them to believe - evidence doesn't come into it - they will search for the tiniest scrap of evidence that supports that belief and desperately hang onto it.

Like people who don't believe in man made global warming despite every single scientific society in the world backing it, they'll still find some disgruntled retired physicist and hang onto his every word.

People generally don't make decisions based on facts and evidence

How many people buy cars based on checklists of features? that might start the process but in the end its about getting people to imagine themselves behind the wheel feeling good.

Same with conspiracy theories - people get a buzz about feeling that they're smarter than all the "experts".

Not read it but I hear this book's quite interesting

About the "Truthers", who think 9/11 was a conspiracy, not looking at the conspiracy but about the people and their culture, what they get out of it

People can believe what they like, they become idiots when they continue to believe it in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Pink Kittens, the conspiracy theories started a long time after the moon landings when people realised they could sell books and DVD’s to the gullible. Also the afore mentioned film didn’t help.

Bagpuss why do you ignore all the reasons why they must have gone? What convinces you they did not?

No Helen It’s not a belief, it’s knowledge, people are idiots because they ignore the evidence not because of what they believe.

Eddie, They also gave the Russians the radio frequencies so they could track them, so there would be no doubt.

Ok theorists lets concentrate on the obvious, How did the laser reflector get up there? How did the moon rocks get down here? Or are the thousands of labs world wide, that have studied them, in on it?
Well Geezer if you believe thousands of labs are in on the global warming conspiracy in order to get funding why can't you believe the laser Ranging teams are in on a similar conspiracy?

After all they get funding from their research too!
Like people who don't believe in man made global warming despite every single scientific society in the world backing it?

No they don't in fact far from it. Those that do are in dispute as to how much contribution is man made.

There is a huge scientific out pouring that is becoming more and more accepted that what is happening to us is just part of a natural cycle.

Not arguing this but there is no conspiracy just opposing points. What you are doing is confusing fact and fiction.

People who don't belive the moon landings happened are stupid, because the facts are there would have had to have been literally hundreds if not thousands of people who took part in it and so far not one person has come forward
In the course of my work I once met one of the people who had landed on the moon. The way he spoke to me about the experience convinced me it was very real. They were all changed people when they came back.

Lets do the global warming thing on another thread shall we.
MMmmmm interesing stuff.I would be convinced moreso if i had seen armstrong with a couple of crackers......everyone knows the moons made of cheese.
If the USA moon landing was a hoax then an awful lot of folks would have to keep their mouths shut, fearing that if they spoke out then they would have an 'accident' a la Karen Silkwood.

Has the 'accident' rate gone up?

If it has then an awful lot more folks would have to learn to stay quiet....

Have I stumbled upon another conspiracy.........discuss!
I am not disputing that they have been up since the "original" moon landing of Armstrong etc. I am just saying that I have doubts about that particular moon landing
Dave - they may argue in how much is man made but they all agree human activity is having an effect on the warming climate

Name one single scientific society that contests that

I believe the last was the American Association of Petroleum Geologists - 4 years ago!

I think this is relevant Geezer because it's to do with the belief in authority and the acceptance (or refusal to do so) of evidence.
