You can order them online here: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/

This site has all the info you could need: http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/

You can look at the INDEXES for the records, from 1837 up to about 2003.  As well as the quarter and district that the event was registered and the GRO reference number, you will get the following info:

Births will give you the name of the child plus after September quarter 1911,  the maiden name of the mother.

Marriages will also give surname of the spouse for marriages after March quarter 1912.

Deaths will give you name of deceased plus after September quarter 1866, age at death and after September quarter 1969, date of birth.

If you want more details, you have to order the actual certificate and this will cost 7 if you have the GRO reference number.

If you are talking about Scotland, I believe you can buy credit on Scotlandspeople website and actually download the full details for events before about 1929.
