Just want to ask this in case I'm becoming old fashioned (36 this Saturday!!) but does anyone else think that my 44 year old neighbour having a sexual relationship with a 17 year old is disgusting? If I were her mother (assuming she is aware of all the facts) I'd go in and drag her out and give him a kicking. He's a chain smoking, alcoholic, fantasist and liar for good measure. No idea why I'm getting so angry about it, but just find it repulsive.

Exactly lofty..
I am pretty mature for my age, especially have to have been these days taking on my 2 stepkids who are not all that much younger then me, and my OH is a big kid at heart who loves playing silly buggers and messing around!
i havent got time to debate this matter further...hope you all have a great day....

Mmmm! perhaps her mother knows nothing about it, but even if she does perhaps she does nothing in the fear of losing her daughter, it could all go wrong and the girl ends up living with the guy. One has got to tread very carefully.
Perhaps too the girl has been sexually active for years & the mother now turns a blind eye.
Its a hard job being a mother of a teenage girl believe me.

Errrr Stoke sorry...but like I said, a paedophile is interested in children that haven't hit puberty. 17 is way over that Mark. 17 year old girls, especially nowadays, look like women. Paedophiles don't fancy women!!
Hi Gromit, like others have said, the relationship is most probably legal, however I am old fashioned and age gaps involving teenage girls and middle aged men leave me cold too.
Actually flump I think there were more relationships between older men and young girls in times gone by than there are nowadays. Older men often had very young mistresses and took very young wives.

Your views are probably more modern - probably because there is more of an obsession about paedophilia these days

But I think ummmm in spot on. Seventeen year old girls are young women not children.
worrying, possibly, if you were her parent. Disgusting, no. None of our business... afraid so.

If they were having a proper relationship out in the open- going on dates etc... maybe it would be different as it would seem less like about sex.
It's not purely the age gap, it's more that she's so very young and he is not a good man. The last teenager he paid interest to was slightly older but had learning difficulties, a stop was put on that pretty quickly.
I was told he once made a sexual comment about his own daughter- even as sharing a joke with someone, if true, that is not appropriate.
Agreed that it is legal and none of my business, they are probably both pretty pleased with themselves, I just know that she'll regret it when she realises what sort of man he is.

How do you know what they get up to?

We all make mistakes...if he is a 'bad man' hopefully she'll learn her lesson early on and avoid other 'bad men'

I must admit if it were my daughter i would not like it.
However as she is over the age of concent i really dont think there is a lot you can do.
We learn by our mistakes and that makes us what we are. Unfortunately, parents cannot protect their children forever, and ultimately they have to make their own choices. We can guide them as they grow up and hope they turn into reasoning sensible adults, but I am afraid the teenage years test any parents.
if this does not concern anyone in your family then its none of your business I'm afraid.
The man concerned probably loves fact that people disapprove of this relationship.
