My bf has spent the night and today so far with his best friend who is, for want of a better expression, waiting for his Mother to die. Him and his sister are not even 25 and have now lost both their parents to cancer. James (the best friend) and I have never really got on. We always make the effort to be nice to each other but we certainly have never been friends. I want to let him and his sister know I am thinking of them both but not sure the best way to go about it. Would you send flowers or should I give the bf a card to pass on? I'm so sad for them both and would like them to know I am around if they need anything but I'm so lucky that I've never experienced anything like this before and not sure what would be appropriate, especially as we've never really got on in the past.

A card. Seeming you have never really got on, I think flowers might be a might be a bit inappropriate.
Not flowers, not yet anyway.
''especially as we've never really got on in the past''

The situation transcends the above comment. I'm sure flowers and/or a card will be appreciated.
Card and tell them how you're thinking of them.
or even a few nice, well chosen words????
Card with appropriate message then an addendum say if they need anything etc
How about writing them a short, hand-written earnest letter on quality stationary expressing what you have written here.

Once they have read it, tThey may see you in a very different light given what ever went on between you, or perceptions thereof
