I just don't do it, when it says people are on-line I just ignore them.

yes, change the setting to "offline"

Just go offline in the chat options and it will remember and keep you offline.

Thanks Ron and others who have replied. Ron, that link is incomplete. Easy enough to choose to go offline except that it keeps restoring online status. What I asked was to permanently disable chat. Any suggestions?
