Affordable UK Train Ticket?

I need to take a train from Manchester to Gatwick airport (or London) next month. According to all the train websites, the lowest fare for someone without a rail pass, such as a young person rail pass, is about 60. The ticket for someone _with_ a young person rail pass is about 15. Does this sound accurate to you? I can't afford 60... there's got to be a way to take a train for less than that without a rail pass... anyone know of one?

I can't take Megabus either. It doesn't leave early enough.

Thanks in advance!

Young Persons gives you a third off so that does sound a bit low.

It depends on the time frame really - if you can book about 8 weeks in advance and specify your trains you should get cheaper fares (although some tickets are not available for sale further in advance than that).  I'd ring national rail enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 and look at thetrainline.com - they ususally have slightly different info.  Try for Virgin advance tickets and GNER tickets. I managed to get an off peak specified train ticket from Durham to London for 20, booking about 6 weeks in advance, with GNER.  As a general rule, trains are extortionate though.

If you book more than seven days in advance you get a substantial discount usually. You have to specify the train and time but it can be worth it for the saving. Google 'national rail uk' and check there.
is it one way? Why not fly? one way fares are about 43 subject to when you want to go. A one hour flight + 1 hour check in might sound more favourable than a long train journey for a few extra quid. Have a look at www.ba.com check your dates. All the best
have you tried www.thetrainline.com? I've just looked on there and there are tickets for as little as 12.  You'll need to get the underground from Euston to Gatwick via Victoria, once you're in London. If you're planning to get a return ticket, check the prices for two singles as they can work out a little bit cheaper
