Plentiful in my garden, but I do feed them throughout the winter.
We don't feed them, but leave lots of scrubby corners in the garden, and there are loads of birds around. Saw goldfinches for the first time here a few days ago - but big healthy flocks of sparrows, blackbirds, magpies, bluetits.
we have loads of wild birds that come into our garden and its amazing how much they like peanuts. in fact somtimes they queue up on the fence and other times they fight to get to them. but i must admit, the peanuts are available for them every day of the year. The other day a female blackbird sat on our fence for nearly half an hour preening her feathers in spite of us in full view of her. had any one else experienced this?

pinki, Are there many cats in your garden?

There`s your answer pinki.
pinki, birds like to be able to see clear space around their feeder, so they can see nothing is waiting to pounce while they are eating. You might do better putting it on a pole in a clear area, rather than on the tree.

I saw a blackbird taking a bath in the cats' water dish near the back door the other day - brave fellow!

never had a problem before usually get loads just this year seems to be a bit sparce..we have 3 cats !! never really been a problem
Chas, where are you? I have lots of birds, but as has been said I feed them, and with two Jack Russels have no cats at all :) Its interesting that you say you usually get them, wonder whats wrong?

I'm in the garden today and am making a list of what I see which I'll post later on the birding thread, (too hot to do much gardening!!) as I'm not getting my usual birds, but am getting some new comers! Maybe it was the harsh winter.

Lunch now :)
Pinki don't put it too far from the tree because they need somewhere to take cover quickly when danger appears. Sunflower hearts will get you loads of different species. Buy good quality if you buy mixed or you'll just get pigeons! By the way did your plants live or die?
I buy fruit and suet mix or fruit and insect mix, No waste and the birds love it.
Mmm that sounds tasty. Bet it's expensive. Is this a loose mix woofgang? Do you get it from the CJ Wildbird Food place?
I wonder chas which part of the country you come from,we have not had as many birds as last year and we live in South Yorkshire,we have used the same feed as other years but the numbers are down.
