MM Links Solutions April 2011 [Week 1]

Apologies for being over an hour late.


“The Count” (aka middlestump) has set a new record for the number of entrants to get onto the scoreboard in a single round of MM Links. Forsaking the obvious sport, his link words were based on the theme of Croquet, as he alluded to the game played by Alice in Wonderland and he went with the following link words:

HULA Hoop
Ball C0CK
SQUARE Peg
Court JESTER

Once Croquet is chosen as the theme, HOOP is unavoidable, then HULA is favourite from a restricted set of options.

Three of these link words went with the first three entrants. First to the oche was patchett who was spinning her HULA HOOP for TWO POINTS, followed by rockfordill playing the part of the COURT JESTER for another TWO POINTS. Entrant #3 was deecee131 who can claim to be a SQUARE PEG ~ but also twirling his Hula Hoop ~ he was well worth his FOUR POINTS.

Each of the next eight contestants picked up at least one bonus point. They included beejay1124, Aquagility, grannydi, Strix, owllady & centrino (Two Points). In the midst of this string were Dinkypuzzled & Christiana who were able to register double hits for Four Points. Once the clock reached 09.06, the opportunity to qualify for bonuses ebbed away and single points were scored by Jools, fordward, boxtops, joto, mirandasmum, tearinghair, jobjockey, Mr Ont-ice, cupid04 & Eiggam.

However, those double hitters included kawakiri, LaneyB, freebi, cliffyg & SHAZZA. Last week SHAZZA also had TWO HITS (I gave her credit for only one). Between the two of them, the Hewats ticked all four boxes! However there’s more. Still with only three hits exposed, Elspeth managed to find all three for the best submission of the week. I am ashamed to say, that last week Elspeth picked up Two Points which I recorded but failed to report. With my sincere apologies, I nominate her as HOT SHOT OF THE WEEK.

“What happened to the last link?”, I hear you ask. That went late on Saturday, after Car Boot Sales are all packed up and gone. It was evasajo who offered BALL C0CK (while still keeping her Hula Hoop in play) for THREE POINTS to mark the end of glorious opening game.

With one bumper week gone, the month of April is off to an incredible. What will Week[2] bring is anybody’s guess. To find out, you need to be there!
