How come, when the actors were doing their bows at the end of 'Oliver', Sykes was booed, but not Fagan, when they're both the baddies . . .

Read the book...
Fagin........
Fagin was a thief and employed young boys to do his theving for him - Bill Sykes beat a woman to death, and tried to drown his dog!!!!

No contest.
(1) Because Fagin cares about the boys, so he's not all bad ... Sykes is all bad.

(2) Beacuse in the book, Fagin gets executed, so he got his comeuppance.
Indeed. The concept of the "good baddie" and the "bad baddie" is very common...

fagin caring for the boys! he makes them steal stuff . . .

And he's a generally bad person - so is the actor in this case IMO.
MarkRae makes a good point, indeed the concept of a 'good' baddie is so common, there is a term for it - the 'anti-hero'.

Speaking of which - when is Dexter Series 3 going to be on terrestrial TV - anyone know?

mollykins - of you are not familiar with Dexter, either through the novels or TV series, I suggest you explore, for a pure definition of an 'anti-hero'.
Who was the two actors?that will tell you how popular they are with the audience.
He does make them steal stuff, Mols.

But, without Fagin, they would all starve.

In the book, Fagin gets hanged.
Same as when we did the production at School! I played Mrs Bedwin. We had a whale of a time doing it, school governers came - the local paper took photos.

Fagin did look after the boys, he made sure they were fed and gave them somewhere to sleep, where as Bill Sykes had no redeeming features whatso ever! Killing poor nancy, trying to drown Bullseye and trying to kidnap Oliver!
boooooooooooooooo!
Question Author
Moonraker, the boy playing Fagin is in my year group - he's stuck up his on a55 so far he can see what he ate yesterday, but people seem to like him for some reason. The guy playing Sykes is in his 40s or 50s and seems like a nice guy in real life but took ages and seemed to enjoy putting his makeup on more than most men would/ should . . .
-- answer removed --
Perhaps the actor playing Bill Sykes did a particuarly bad job?
