Just received my new stereo and the speaker connections are different. My old stereo speaker wire just has the ends stripped back and stuffed into a connector block and the extension wire then runs to the back of the stereo. The new stereo has a different type of connector block of its own on the end of the wire which goes into the back of the stereo unit. Just wondering if all stereos are like this nowadays?

There are probably as many types of connectors as there are speaker manufacturers, but looking at the manual for your stereo, it looks like Sony have their own ideas. I'm more used to speaker connectors of the type provided for for your stereo's AM Loop Antenna. At least with those it's a simple matter to use longer cables if you want to move your speakers around.
Most use spring grippers now to take bare cable ends .. or binding posts.
