So far I've bought 4 'used' books...and they looked like the other books on my bookcase that have already been read.
how long is the piece of used string that you're hoping to buy?
Read the description.

Generally the lower the price the more wear and tear an item will have.
Not necessarily... Some sellers (e.g. Zoverstocks) use software which undercuts other sellers by a penny every time, and price wars break out. I've seen items which were originally listed for over £10 eventually go for 50p...

As long as it's readable/ watchable I don't mind . . . can you easily return stuff from amazon?
I have bought several used books frim Amazon over the years, never had a problem.
Read the description and look at sellers' feedback
If it's shown as 'used', you're almost certainly buying from Amazon Marketplace, rather than from Amazon itself. i.e. you're not buying the item from the big international bookseller but from a private trader who is using the Amazon website to advertise their goods. (It's similar to buying fixed price goods on eBay).

Just like eBay, Amazon Marketplace has policies in place regarding unsatisfactory items. Just like eBAy, most users of their site will stick to the policies but there's always a small risk that you'll encounter a dodgy trader.

Incidentally, if you're seeking secondhand books, there's a much better source (with a far greater range available):

I quite often buy from amazon marketplace, some good bargains, if there are any major issues with the products they normally mention it in the blurb and it is priced to suit its condition. though you can buy books for pennies sometimes!

check the sellers feedback as well

Ta, I checked the unser rating and the descriptions . . .
You have to write in the blurb when you are selling, about the condition. If you were really dissatisfied you can send it back for a refund.
