The Japanese earthquake struck at about 5:45 our time yet Hawaii is already putting out warning sirens.

So how fast does a tsunami travel?

About 500 mph in open ocean depending in the wavelength.
They said 300mph on TV today but is decellarating all the time so can run out of steam at a faraway location.

can get up to 400 to 500 mph depending on the initial dome of water........some of these can be uinbelievably frightening in size.
