The new British passports have a page in the back which contains a chip and what looks like a copper aerial. What is the purpose of this please?

There's a very good reason why it looks like an antenna. That's because it is one!

The chip is an RFID one

which contains the data for the new facial recognition system, with the antenna being used to increase the signal range & quality.
