start a political party, pressure group, anything - to claim back common sense, allow political incorrectness and bring some sanity back into our lives?

I'm sure I can't be the only one who now expects the end of free speech for fear of offending someone, the immasculation of the English language eg 'chair' instead of chair (dare I write it?) man, the banning of the nursery rhyme 'Ba Ba Black Sheep' etc?

I'd do it myself but sadly I'm not a chief, only a very sincere indian. (Can i still say that?)

oh please.... i been thinking this for long time now. Common sense has gone out the window, freedom of speech should be exactly that (without fear of offending someone), political incorrectness would be great !!! Sanity has left this land i think.
BRING IT BACK !!!!! I want to be able to make jokes without first looking around me to see who i will offend.
I too would welcome this but feel I am not in a position to do this .. but would absolutely vote for it... and yes you may say a very sincere indian. i am a very sincere white england (dare I say that) !!!!
oooppps i meant to say 'very sincere white english woman' .. have i offended anyone out there... (dare i say!!!)
Coobeastie, goodness, has this nonsense really been going on for that long? No, the Council were not attempting to replace Christmas - just to undermine it..
Jake. What about a woman who calls it a bloody shovel?
I agree entirely Lew, this is all becoming madness, how the next generation take all this is beyond me. Pretty soon we all will be devoid of all humour and creative thought. Enid Blyton must be turning in her grave, Noddy and BigEars were best friends for ages before this started. I just hope there is enough resistance to keep this green and pleasant land intact and not turn it into another war-zone.

bibblebub: yep, that's the one. The language that's been developing naturally, evolving with time as opposed a sudden rethink and knee-jerk reactions.

Coobeastie: " Coobeastie "It's the allowance of loony ideas being considered"

Free thought must be banned...am I right in thinking that's what you're advocating."

and

"Coobeastie I'm intrigued....come on Lewpaper which of my comments have caused you offence"

Second one first - I'm not at all offended. Surprised possibly, not offended. How could anyone be offended by these comments you've given which are completely meaningless and so far from the subject at hand I wonder if you're not in fact responding to a listing you read last week.

In the first of your unique style of responses where you avoid the topic completely you mention 'free thinking'. Could you point out where I've mentioned it? and foreign as it is to this listing, you must consider yourself a free-thinker then. So you're not one of the sheep who obey without question the abandonment of phrases used for eons in favour of giving nouns a gender? That's free thinking is it?
Well I would suggest the fact that you don't like the idea of people having thoughts that you consider to be loony to be good example of wanting to repress free thought.

"So you're not one of the sheep who obey without question the abandonment of phrases used for eons in favour of giving nouns a gender? That's free thinking is it? "

As I've pointed out in my posts most of the things that you are bemoaning the end of are still in place and in use.

Or it helps I'll spell it out.

1. The banning of Christmas was mentioned (albeit by another poster), it wasn't the case at the time it was reported and its not the case now. If it was 100% accurate at the time the of course its longevity would be of importance. As it is after 12 long years its brought out as evidence of the country going to the dogs.

2. You state "The immasculation of the English language eg 'chair' instead of chair (dare I write it?) man" My link which is only a few days old has Chairman used 10 time this from a source which is often touted as being left wing....where is the evidence that its being banned or pulled from usage. Blackboards - have a look on www.chalkboardsuk.co.uk you'll find plenty for sale.My daughter signs Baa Baa Blacksheep at nursery...where's the evidence that its been banned.

Now obviously I must have upset you somewhat as you then resorted to playground tactics

"I'm surprised you have the word 'think' in your vocabulary, it certainly isn't in your comprehension. This listing's been on here too long - it's now attracting borderline nursery school drop-outs"

A fantastic way to win doubters around don't you think.

But Coobeastie, I'm offering an opinion, what do I care whether you or anyone else agrees with it not. Certainly come back with alternative arguments and ideas and maybe somewhere in the middle we could at least agree to disagree. I'm certainly not trying to persuade anyone to do anything just stating my point of view. The reader can either agree or disagree as they choose. You yourself mention that I'm trying to win doubters around - I don't give a toss.
Come back with alternatives, certainly but leave the thinly-veiled insults 'in the playground' as you'd put it. Not everyone who disagrees with anyone need be denegrated for thinking differently.
My comments re nursery school drop-outs weren't addressed at anyone in particular, just the trend to drag a perfectly good argument (irrespective of your opinions) down to the lowest common factor. If you feel comfortable siding with those comments, feel free.
Most of my comments haven't been about the topic but in defence of my right to have a different outlook. I'll see you at playtime,
"Certainly come back with alternative arguments and ideas"

I thought I had come back with an alternative...you say free speech is ending I say it isn't and have provided evidence to back my claim.

"Not everyone who disagrees with anyone need be denegrated for thinking differently"

Was it not you who called into question my intelligence after I'd provided evidence to dispute your opening suggestion that the end of free speech is nigh.

"but leave the thinly-veiled insults in the playground' as you'd put it"

Though I may have questioned some of your statements I do not feel I have denigrated you in the slightest.
Playground it is then ;)

I've been reading this topic with interest but it seems that cobeastie either has his own agenda or just taking the p!$$. I can't find any cogency in his contributions at all. I'm a senior mathematics lecturer so not exactly thick but I can't make any sense of his ramblings.

This listing must be nearing the end of its shelf life and what better words could it end with? Twenty, thirty, forty years ago they'd have been considered so obvious that they need not be said - today they sound so refreshing. What an indictment on today's values.
No agenda Mrs Slippy and I only post again bcause I wonder exactly where have my posts lacked cogency as its now twice that I've been told that my posts are irrelevant to the original question.

My posts have either been in direct response to the original post, later posts my by lewerpaper or to comments made by other posters. They have of course been for the opposite argument that political madness hasn't gone mad.

I appreciate that there are those who believe that pc has indeed gone made and is rife in our country taking a stranglehold on our way of life..afterall this is a democracy and we should be entitled to our own beliefs.

I just happen to believe that most of the media reports about it are blown so far out of proportion as to be laughable.
"political madness hasn't gone mad" political correctness hasn't gone mad as it should read.
