In the last 24hrs Ive had M/soft Norton and HP with their fingers in my pc ,God knows what they are updating or doing but I'm glad they do
My question is do they speak to one and other before they alter things, If not why don't they clash at my end

"do they speak to one and other before they alter things"
Not to any extent.

"if not why don't they clash at my end"
Updates are not pushed from their end, they are pulled from your end according to the update checking schedule for each of the software packages on your machine. But they do sometimes clash, especially if you haven't been on line for a while. I've seen a Java update pop up halfway through installing a Windows update.
When you say they have been in your PC, please tell me someone didn't phone you up and asked you to run a few commands on yoru PC?
Updates from M'soft, HP etc will all be well tested before they send them out.

However while a company will test their fixes on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 etc, before they send them out, you cant test for every bit of hardware and every bit of software (and every release of every bit of software).

So you could have a situation where a new fix may cause problems in certain situations (with particular hardware or software).

And you could have a situation that M'soft and HP (for example) each send a fix out on the same day that "clash" with each other.

But this would soon be reported and one or other company will rush a fix out within hours to correct the problem.
