Domains and hosting

I am being persuaded to have a domain name and hosting for just one item on my website which has a /extension. Can this be done or does a whole website have to be uploaded to a host? I have other unrelated extensions, listed by search engines, and don't want to upset the existing arrangement. Advice appreciated please.
