In the early 1960's I remember watching and old b&w film in which  a man killed his sister and then took over her identity but at the same time carried on his own life and would appear dressed as his sister when the part required it. In one scene (really scarey) a female figure is seen (in silhouette)descending some stairs in what appeared to be a stair lift. When she reaches the bottom of the stair her head falls off! I was only a young kid at the time and watched the film when my parents were out. It frightened the life out of me and as you can see has made a lasting impression in my mind. Any ideas please?

maggie - in psycho the killer dresses as his mother, who he has killed!

But I think it sounds like psycho too though. You're sure it was the sister lampgb? Yoy can read a synopsis of psycho here and see if it ring any bells.
