I don't hold out much hope of a painted plastic lid surviving, if it keeps getting hit to open it.

Could you find one that at least has a khaki or green lid, and just paint the bin itself?

thats very true.. in the end I have bought a double deep crate with 2 part flap lid in green the sides are clear but this means people can get a idea about what other people are donating...which I think is a great bonus.... as the lid is already green I have bought a second green spray used masking tape to make shapes and sprayed lightly in the second green when I remove the masking tape fingers crossed it will look like really cool camo print, will then decide whether or not to use a stencil to put writing on lid in white
