My nomination for wine of the week is Makutu Bay Marlborough Sauvignon - currently down to £4.99 (rrp £9.99) in Sainsbury's.

I also thought the wine I tried in Café Rouge in Gun Wharf yesterday was worth a mention - Picpoul de Pinet. I've never tried it before and was delighted with it. It's dry, grassy and herbaceous, well rounded, with a lingering finish. I can highly recommend it. I will be looking out for more of this wine on my shopping expeditions.

If you have a nomination for wine of the week, please feel free to mention it. :-)

When in Asda the other day, I took advantage of the 3 for a tenner offer. I bought a Yellowtail Shiraz (normally £6.48 a bottle) which is one of my all time favourite reds, along with a Chilean Sauv and a bottle of rather crap Prosecco, normally priced at £4.99 or thereabouts. Avoid screw-top proseccos like the plague!!

However, had I just bought 3 Shiraz, the saving would have been considerable when you triple the unit price.
I'm a bit of a wine philastine, like sweet white and fruity red, not keen on dry wines at all.

I don't drink red very often because of the dryness, the nicest I've probably had were in Romania and Budapest, lovely and fruity and not dry tasting at all (I'm with Boo on the Ribena!).

Often drink white or rose with lemonade to make it sweeter (love whisky with ginger beer too).

I like fortified wine and port though, love mulled wine.

We had a free wine tasting session in work last week, a promotional thing where they hope you go on to buy some of their wine, had about 5 whites then 5 reds then a port and cognac (urgh). Good quality wines but wouldn't have bought any of them, too pricey for me to violate with the likes of lemonade :)

I quite like Port and Lemonade, Jenna. I can taste similar to Sangría sometimes.
I really like rose wines Beringer Zinfandel Blush is more my taste, I find a lot of wines are too acid ad dry for me.
Question Author
Beringer do a sparkling Rosé that isn't too bad, AYG.
Me too :) I have too much of a sweet tooth I think! Can't drink things like gin or brandy either and will more often than not have lime in lager.

Spirits wise I'm more of a sweet martini, Archers, Malibu etc... girl. Saying that, I developed a serious thing for Amaretto sours after my brother's wedding in Canada last year!

Only ever drink out really, very very rarely at home and never occurs to me to buy anything like wine for home, I just drink diluted cordial by the pint glass (after mainlining coffee during the day).
Whine of the week?

Harry Redknapp's about Man United's 2nd 'goal' last Saturday

Totally justified mind

I'm a bit of a philistine with wines, Port and lemonade, or even a Marsala (sp) are nice. But being a greedy pig I like to have a good drink, not sip, so I usually stick to lager.
Question Author
I don't mind a drop of Malibu with Cola and am rather partial to an Amaretto on ice, after dinner, but am not a lover of sweet drinks as a rule.

I do like a nice G&T when I'm flying.

I think I'm going to treat myself to a bottle of Monopole Rosé this Xmas - strawberries, cream and toasted brioche in a glass... Yum !
I'd love to find some nice wines I do enjoy on their own. I tend to default to house or Pinot if sharing, more likely to let the others chose. I should really make more of an effort to find something I can savour and really enjoy.
Question Author
Jenna, if you don't like wines too dry, but fancy trying something a bit better than, say, a Hock, try a nice Vouvray (available from all wine stockists and supermarkets).
Ooh thank you :) I will have a look out for it next time I'm in the supermarket x
Question Author
Tesco do one for about £4.50, Jenna. They are usually Medium, but the occasional one can be dry, so read the label first if you do choose one. Let me know what you think :-) x
i have to agree, the wine in cafe rouge, gunwharf is so good! i particularly like the medium white wine they do- one of the best wines i've had!
Question Author
The medium white wine? Can you enlighten me? ;-)
i can't remember for the life of me what it was called! i think i drank too much of it! :-s
Question Author
I must confess, I didn't notice a "medium white wine" on the menu. I tend to peruse in order of grape variety, region, etc..

If you remember the name of it, you must let me know. :-)
