1. Next year we go digital.
2. We have Sky sports
3. The dvd player has given up the ghost now.
I could replace the DVD player now and get a Sky+ box either now or later.
I could buy DVD recorder and player now which (I think) means I will not need a Sky+ box?
Not being very technically minded which would be the least technically challenging to use?
Are there any alternatives? I wish to continue watching one station whilst recording programmes on other channels, and of course play our existing DVDs..

Only don`t forget to check if you can receive freeview where you live because I can`t until 2012 where I am.

A dvd/hard drive recorder with freeview would be good. I can watch cable whilst recording a freeview channel. If I want to record cable, just switch to the freeview on the tv.

The advantage of a Sky+ box over a DVD recorder is that the Sky+ box records to the hard disk and so if you watch a program and dont want to keep it you can delete it from the Sky box.

But on a DVD recorder you will have to use a DVD disk every time you want to record anything, and if you dont want to keep it you have wasted a DVD.

I think you will find that most people who have a Sky+ box are very happy with it and are amazed by its ease of use and capabilities.

Not technically challenging at all, if you want to record something you just press the big red Record button on the sky remote control. No need for start times or end times and so on, the Sky+ sorts it all out for you.

And if you want to record every episode of a series you just press the "Series Link" button. Easy Peasy.

If I were you I would got for a Sky+ box.

You can get a DVD recorder at a later date.
btw With a Sky+ box you can record one channel while watching another.

To get round the DVD problem why not buy a very cheap DVD player until you have saved up for a DVD recorder.

Tesco do DVD players for around £20 to £25
You can also get a DVD Recorder with twin freeview tuners and a hard drive. Thus solving all the problems (when you get full freeview that is)

Thank you all for your input and for making it all a little clearer. I think I shall buy a new DVD player now and get a Sky + box a little further along the line ( next " not to be refused " promotion). I will keep the video in case I wish to record something to be played in another location. Decision made, worry gone!!! Thank you.
