VLOOKUP

Wonder if you can help.
I was asked by someone to basicaly do a vlookup on a file that was sent did it no problem
The process is based on codes, a lot of codes, however when I type the code in I don't get a repsonse if I copy the code from the range everything does what its supposed to.
I have checked the formatting, duplicated the cell, but if I type it nothing, copy it fine.
What am I doing wrong?
