My front nearside tyre on my 97 Fiesta has worn down but the rest of the tyre is OK. The offside tyre is wearing evenly, is this in need of tracking?

You have bent the NS lower wishbone .. or it has a bush/joint gone. Have you hit a kerb? Common with Fiestas. Check the arm with tough leverage, and change if necessary. Get it tracked up AFTER.
Tracking will affect both tyres, as one compensates with steering to keep car straight. This would wear both.

you don't say inside/outside edge, or stop wheelspinning or do roundabouts slower,
like i don't

It's the outside edge of the tread. I don't wheelspin but I go round roundabouts a bit quick but without skidding.

Albags, thanks, I was wondering why the other tyre wasn't wearing!
my 2005 fiesta had odd tyre wear on its first set of tyres. turns out was nothing wrong and it was a dodgy set of tyres.
