What diameter would a round table have to have to seat eight people, roomily? I know it isn't rocket science... but I never was good with maths.

Decide on a comfortable width for each person - 1 metre should be more than adequate.

Multiply by number of persons = 8 metres circumference

Divide by Pi ~ 2.55 metres diameter.

A 2 metre diameter would allow each person 0.78 metres

Thanks a bunch, ABerrant! Perfect!
With a round table you also need to take the legroom into consideration.
and room for the legs
Question Author
Yes. Wonder if four legs would suffice to support such a large table top...?
four legs is probably optimum for stability and legroom, there should not be any problem with taking the weight if they are about 50mm diameter and braced properly. Are you going to build the table, modify an existing one or buy one?
Question Author
Thanks jomifl. Have it built, if anything.
Don't neglect to measure the doorway, in case you need to move the table in or out.
And expect a visit from Lancelot and friends.....
Question Author
Good point mibn2cweus - I've been known to do dafter things than that... gingejbee, Lancelot can come if he does his Silly Walk:) scotman thanks - you're a master googler!
My pleasure Swedeheart.

If you get a table made specially for you by top class Swedish woodworkers you must post a picture of the finished item.
Question Author
Hm, yeah... but I haven't decided. I would have to throw almost every other piece of furniture out first, including my lovely desk, and that's a tough decision. You interested in woodwork scotman? I'll show you my desk, it's by Nanna Ditzel who was considered the designer queen of Danish furniture http://www.modernity....zel-for-Pedersen.aspx
Question Author
(I have a similar one, not that particular one. Mine's oak and no varnish, very fair.)
Kit, thanks for that link to the desk.
I don't have much knowledge of Danish furniture designers.
It looks a nice piece of furniture and very nice wood. I have to say I am a bit traditional regarding things like desks.
I prefer them with at least one set of pedestal drawers. I suppose it depends what sort of work you do and how much time you spend at the desk.
Is yours a light or dark oak? If no varnish do you oil or wax it?

If you think that a round table would take up too much room, and you don't want traditional rectangular, perhaps something elliptical would suit better.

Light oak, John, and it should be impregnated with 'såpa' at regular intervals but I'm not all that ambitious I'm sorry to say. Can't find the English word for 'såpa' but it's a special kind of liquid, fatty soap that particularly the Danish use a lot instead of varnish. They have a great tradition of furniture design and silver design.
