UK answer

yes silver has a hallmark like gold and other precious metal (platinum).

I think you should google hallmark

Basically it should have the place mark, a mark of who made it, and a date mark, (and possibly a few more - purity and duty have been recorded at diffetent times)

But but but - jewellery may not be marked

(but then it cannot lawfully be sold as silver)

Some silver may not be hallmarked depending where it comes from. However most Western silver will be

http://www.thomas-skipton.co.uk/Hallmarks.htm

Also has hallmarks from Sweden Holland Portugal and Austria.

Stirling silver is 92.5%, Mexican Silver 95%, Britania Silver 95.84 and Fine Silver 99.9%

It is hard to tell if gold is real (which is why it's hallmarked) In the past people used a touchstone http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touchstone
