You will have to order a Marriage Certificate using the info on the record. You could try Parish Records - look at where they were living on the census around the time of the marriage and that may give you a clue. Try using the GENUKI site for the area, you will get a list of churches in the area.
Have you tried familysearch.org? If the link works this is their International Genealogical Index where you may find parish records.

If the link doesn't work go to familysearch.org then click on `search' then choose `advanced search'.

On Ancestry the `London, England, Marriage and Banns, 1754 - 1921' database is very good if they married in London.

Thanks Carol & Carrot, they married in Cheshire but i shall follow your advice and see if it gets me anywhere. Cheers peeps
It's a case of emination really, not every church was allowed to perform marriages, most villages used the parish church for the marriages and marriages tended to take place in the brides home parish. Every registration district held a register for every place that could marry and that is where the registrar recorded the marriage as well as the church/chapel register. The reference you have is from the civil register but the registrar would have recognised the volume number as belonging to a partocular parish and the registrar now will know that info too but is unlikely to part with the info! Anyway, look at GENUKI for the village/town converned and it will list every ploace a marriage could legally have taken place between certain dates,
