I want to apply for a job but don't wish for my current employers to know, but I need to use them as a reference.  It says on the application form that you can request for them not to contact the referee prior to interview but then it goes onto say that with this being a job in education and working with children that they have the right to contact referee for reference before interview.  So does that mean they definatly will or just they might?  Its just if I get an interview and don't get the job then they will know I am looking for another job and it would just be akward

Hi, Basically what it means is that you whilst you can't prevent them from contacting your current employers you can request that they don't get in tough until after the interview.

I work in the public sector and have done for some time in a couple of roles. I can't speak for this particular employer but I've never had an employer approached for a reference unless I was offered the job after an interview.

They could be interviewing loads of people for this role and getting references takes time and effort - most of which would be wasted if they got the references for all candidates as they really are only interested in the successful candidate.

I very much doubt they'd ask for a reference before interview. Most people would understand that you might not want your current employers to know that you are looking elsewhere and would respect that.

Good luck by the way

Trust Lillabet to return with excellent advice in this category!  :-) The only thing I can add is this... contact the people you're applying to.  Speak to them on the phone and explain your concerns.  I'm sure they'll be able to put your mind at ease, they must have similar situations cropping up all the time! :-)

Another thing to bear in mind is because of Data Protection issues, a lot of employers these days will not provide a full and detailed reference outlining all your good points, etc.   They will only provide your job title and the dates of your service with the company.    This doesn't mean you've been an unsatisfactory employee;  just that the company has adopted this policy to prevent themselves being sued for providing an unsatisfactory reference if an employee is hired and then turns out to be a disaster.     Do you know another manager/ senior employee at your organisation who would be prepared to provide a Character reference as a private individual?.

Also, if you're going to be working with children you will almost certainly need to be police vetted.  Good luck!

I think that (regardless of the content of the reference provided by your current employer) your new employer will need your explicit permission to contact them for said reference.
Maybe this is already set out in the application form : only you know.
