I was sitting in a pub up and a man bursts through the door and exclaims

"A just had me first bairn! and its a wee lad!"

and people well congratulating him and buying him drinks and one English man in the corner shouts out

"so whit ye gonna call yer son?"

to which the man replies

"Nathan"

the Englishman in the corner is shocked by this and says

"You can't call a child Nathan! ye gotta give him a name!"

Nice one. I know it's a joke BTW but i had a mate who worked on the oil rigs and met a guy with a broad scottish accent. My mate thought he said
'Furry boots ye fray' when what he actually said was 'Whereabouts are you from'
I remember working in a bar as a student when a Scot came in and asked for "Peanut butter", I said pardon a couple of times and he just kept saying "peanut butter". In the end exasperated with me he pointed at the bitter pump head and said "peanut butter, there laddy"!
I love it,lindylou16. A good time at night to have a laugh. Marbert.
CAS stole my favourite phrase. Furry boots! Makes me snigger.

I am way too tired to think of any other amusing phrases. I live in Perth and our accent and dialect is pretty tame - the further north you go the stranger it gets.

"Fit fur" = "what for".
Lol :)
Ah nivnae kin fit yeer sayin ma loon. meaning i have not got a clue what you are saying my boy. if you substitute loon for quinne its girl instead of boy. this is usually known as the doric and hails fron the east neuk of scotland ie peterhead , aberdeen area, other sayings include ...Ahm fair drookit, meaning im soaking wet and hoos your doos? meang how are you . Ahm fair scunnered means your tired. and fit like ? also means how are you.
Some of those have drifted down to Glasgow too, my MIL uses scunnert.
Im only 15mls from wolf so we have quite an indistictive accent apart from the fact we are obviously Scottish (thank eff lol)

'Furry boots' is one of my fave jokes as well :)

Dorics fae the Moray Firth loon-nae east Neuk o Fife neeb lol
I was working in a local charity shop last summer and two gentlemen were having a loud conversation in a foreign language that I couldn't quite identify.

It wasn't until they came to the till that I realised that they were from Newcastle. They had terribly strong accents.
I love regional dialects and hope they never disappear.
Some years back, there was a programme about trawlermen on the TV - the crew were from Peterhead, and I'm sorry to say that, despite living with Scotsmen for the last 40 years, I couldn't understand a word they said. I felt sorry, they were so enthusiastic but I just couldn't make it out.
o we need that subtitled as well boxy lol!!!
since when has peterhead been in fife ??????????
peterhead the most easterly point in scotland hence east neuk lol
