This is a last ditch attempt before I have a gastric band or start sticking my fingers down the back of my throat - what is the best diet - some say drop carbs but some say more carbs. I had always thought low fat high fibre and lots of carbs

Both Atkins and Low GI have worked for me......but you have to stick to them, weigh out food etc.
Beginning to think that it's actually perfectly true what they say...if you want to lose weight eat less and move about a bit more.
lady alex, you have hit the nail on the head, there were no fat people released from any concentration camp.
eat less, move more - portion control, portion control, portion control. forget fad diets.
Bread, potatoes and chocolate - all of which I love - are my downfall. Leave'em out, lose weight. Drink loads of water before each meal, it fills you up so you don't eat so much.
exercise....dieting alone rarely works especially long term! even if its a brisk walk just once a day, and clean your teeth regularly your less likely to want to eat after you have just cleaned your teeth (phsycilogical)
ethan with respect its not as simple as eat less, move more. my mate has had a battery of tests which deduced that he cannot digest carbs effectively, despite eating a low fat diet and exercising 6 days a week, he could not lose weight, he went through the usual "oh you must be eating junk" and the very unhelpful "you have to lay off the pies" and the wonderful "eat less, move more" mantra

reducing his intake of simple sugars has resulted in 2 stone weight loss that has been effortless, he is still going but his portion size remains the same, he has just changed the carbs to protein and a smaller amount of complex carbs.
ok cazz, whatever worked for your friend :)
i still believe eat less, move more.
With the above....

My cousin is on a healthy plan as he's a boxer. High protein, minimum carbs and loads of exercise. It has dropped off him.
of course you do...;)
It will be the one that best fits into your lifestyle, low carbing can be an effort as you have to think about what you will eat at work for instance, and it can be expensive if you don't want it to get boring....I have the knack now and there are lots of goosd websites
As you are making comments about gastric bands I would guess you possibly have a lot to lose like me..I think the answer may be not to keep thinking of the total amount just have small targets...my wii fit is useful recommend it as it is sometimes difficult to face the gym/pool etc if you feel really self conscious
Read what you wrote, Irish.

'I had always thought ..... lots of carbs'

Perhaps you need to rethink!
eat less, exercise more. Sounds simple enough but if you are at the point of thinking about a gastric band it's not so easy. Begin with eating 2/3rds of your 'normal' meal portion, walk for at least an hour a day, take the stairs or ramps instead of an elevator or escalator, substitute chocolate with raisins or dates. Good luck xoxo
I agree with the eat less and exercise. Check the % fat of all you eat, reduce meat to about 2-4 ounces a day. Another trick is don't buy stuf you shouldn't eat. When you eat do nothing else, no TV, no radio, no reading, only chatting is OK, daft but it seems to help.
I've started Weight Watchers again today for about the 5th time! I'm hopeful it will work this time! lol
